The Nordic countries prove socialism works, and that capitalism is the inferior system.
The claim you picked The Nordic countries prove socialism works, and that capitalism is the inferior system.
Denmark and Norway are capitalist market economies with a large welfare state on top.
What is true
They tax a lot and spend a lot on services. That is not public ownership of the means of production, and it is funded by private firms operating in open markets.
The Nordic model, as the countries themselves describe it, is private ownership, market prices, and free trade, plus universal services and coordinated bargaining. IKEA, Novo Nordisk, Volvo, Maersk, and Equinor are not Gosplan. Product markets in the Nordics rank among the most open in the OECD.
Heritage’s 2026 Index of Economic Freedom puts Norway 8th in the world (score 78.8). Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway have sat in the top tier for years on property rights, trade freedom, and business regulation. That is the opposite of a planned economy.
The useful lesson is narrower: a rich capitalist country can choose to buy a generous safety net. It cannot skip the capitalist part and keep the net. The 1970s Swedish overreach, and the 1990s repair, are the cautionary tale the slogan leaves out.
