Calling Elon a Tesla co-founder is a lie. He bought the company and sued his way onto the plaque.
The claim you picked Calling Elon a Tesla co-founder is a lie. He bought the company and sued his way onto the plaque.
Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning founded Tesla in 2003. Musk was the lead investor in 2004. A 2009 settlement lets him use the co-founder title.
What is true
The original incorporation did not include him. The company that survived 2008 did, under his money, product direction, and CEO seat. Both halves of that sentence are the record.
Tesla Motors was incorporated in July 2003 by Eberhard and Tarpenning. Musk led the February 2004 Series A, became chairman, and later CEO during the 2008 near-death. He pushed the Roadster through production, then Model S.
After Eberhard was ousted, litigation followed. The 2009 settlement allows Musk, JB Straubel, Eberhard, Tarpenning, and Ian Wright to be described as co-founders. That is a legal peace treaty, not a time machine. It is fair to say he did not incorporate Tesla. It is not fair to say he “bought a finished car company” — there was no Model S, no factory scale, and barely a Roadster.
