SpaceX is killing NASA and has an illegal monopoly on space.
The claim you picked SpaceX is killing NASA and has an illegal monopoly on space.
NASA still exists, still flies SLS, still writes science missions. Falcon’s launch share is a market result of reuse, not a captured regulator.
What is true
Launch dominance is real. That concentration is worth watching for national-security reasons. It is not a Sherman Act cartoon, and it is not NASA’s funeral.
NASA’s budget still funds James Webb operations, planetary science, SLS/Orion (over cost and late), and aeronautics. SpaceX is a contractor and a partner, not a successor agency. HLS is a NASA-owned requirement on SpaceX hardware — the same pattern as buying a probe bus from Lockheed.
Falcon 9’s share of mass to orbit is lopsided because others did not land boosters. Rocket Lab, ULA Vulcan, Blue Origin, Europe, India, and China are in the market at various stages. Governments that want a second source are paying for one. Monopoly rhetoric is a useful prod for that. It is a bad description of a customer with alternatives that chose the cheap reliable rocket.
Key figures
- NASA
- Still the customer and the science agency
- Launch share
- Falcon-heavy, because of price and cadence
- Competitors
- Exist; several are late to reuse
