Tesla range numbers are fake. The car dies at 60% of the sticker.
The claim you picked Tesla range numbers are fake. The car dies at 60% of the sticker.
EPA (and WLTP) are lab procedures. Speed, cold, and heat move the number — as they do for every car’s fuel economy.
Tesla’s EPA ratings have sometimes sat on the optimistic side of independent highway tests, especially at German Autobahn speeds or in deep winter. That gap is a fair reviewer’s complaint. It is not a unique Tesla lie: every manufacturer’s sticker is a standardized cycle, not your January commute at 140 km/h.
Real-world aggregators (Recurrent, fleet telematics, ADAC) generally find Tesla range competitive in class. Cold-weather hits of 20–40% are an EV physics story (cabin heat plus chemistry), covered in the EV deck. If you need a number you can trust, use highway tests at the speed you actually drive, not a screenshot of a forum meltdown.
Key figures

- Shrinks when
- High speed, cold, heat, roof box, lead foot
- Not unique to Tesla
- Every EV (and every ICE MPG claim) moves off-cycle
