Elon shut off Starlink and sabotaged Ukraine’s war.
The claim you picked Elon shut off Starlink and sabotaged Ukraine’s war.
Starlink was turned on for Ukraine and kept on. A geofence refused to enable a specific Crimea drone strike. That is not “he unplugged the country.”
What is true
Musk has been an erratic political actor on Ukraine. He floated a “peace plan” that Kyiv hated. That is not the same as a total network kill.
In 2022 SpaceX activated Starlink in Ukraine; SpaceX initially ate a large part of the cost, then the U.S. and partners paid. It became critical for civil and military connectivity. Reporting in 2023 (including the Washington Post / Isaacson excerpts) described a request to enable coverage for a Ukrainian drone attack on Sevastopol. Musk declined to extend the network for that offensive, citing escalation. Coverage inside Ukraine continued.
Whether a private CEO should hold a veto on a geofence is a serious civil-military question. It is also the opposite of the viral sentence “he shut off Ukraine’s internet.” If your actual complaint is that public infrastructure should not sit on one man’s toggle, say that — and then talk about contracts, not a cartoon kill switch.
